New York City Food

Written by Cook Kosher on Sunday, 11 September 2011. Posted in Food Mood

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about September 11, 2001 is:  “Where were you? What were you doing at that time?”.

New York City changed on that day 10 years ago and the world will never be the same. Our hearts go out the families who lost loved ones on that tragic day and we will always remember the brave firefighters who gave their lives to protect others.

We we'd like to honor New York with what we know best – food.

The cuisine of NYC compromises the cuisines of various ethnic groups. Really it’s the most diverse city and you can find all foods represented there. You name it – Mexican, Jewish, Irish, Italian, Greek, Indian, Caribbean… We could go on and on. What we found most fascinating was the list of food identified with New York City origins:

Hot dogs

Manhattan clam chowder – okay that’s not kosher

New York- style cheesecake

New York- style pizza

Strip steak

New York- style bagel

New York- style pastrami

Baked pretzels

Italian ice

Knish

Egg benedict

Ice cream cone

Lobster Newberg- not kosher either :-)

Waldorf Salad

Doughnut

Delmonico steak

Black and white cookie

I am not sure it is only a New York City Food. However, from my childhood, I connect Manhattan and winter nights with roasted chestnuts! During the winter months, there are stands selling chestnuts which is wrapped in cone shaped paper. Absolutely, delicious!
