Yes, you can make your own sambussak! This recipe includes step by step instructions for making your very own sambussak dough. Once you use this dough, you will never want to use the store bought dough again. You have the option of filling it with meat or cheese. The cheese sambussak iis a great option for Chanukah. You can find the semolina in a middle eastern grocery. Sambussak freeze beautiful.
- For the dough
1 cup fine semolina
2 cup flour
1 cup butter/margarine (for meat (2 sticks)
¼ cup water
- Cheese Filling
3 cup cheese (Approx.)
- Meat Filling
1 small chopped onion
1 lb chopped meat
In the bowl of an electric mixer with the dough attatchment, mix together flour, semolina and butter/margarine. Alternatively you can mix it by hand.
Add water slowly. Mix for a few more minutes. A dough will begin to form.
Continue mixing until a smooth dough forms.
**Test the dough by patting down a small piece of dough and folding it in half, if no cracks form in the dough, the dough is ready
To make cheese filling: Mix the egg and cheese together.
To make the meat filling: Saute onion in a non stick frying pan. Add meat, breaking it up with a fork. Cook until done.
Allow meat to cool and blot excess fat with a paper towel.
To prepare the sambussak: Roll dough into 1 in. balls, press in sesame seeds.
Flaten dough with a tortilla presser or with the bottom of a glass.
Fill dough with desired filling. Fold in half and pinch closed.
To decorate the sambusak: Starting at one edge of the sambussak, pull and fold a small pieces of dough until the sambussak has a nice ridge around it.
Bake at 350 for 15-25 minutes.
