When I started getting into food photography, I discussed the topic as much as I could with the photographers I work with. I am lucky to have gotten some really good advice. One of my favorites was this:

Don't think you can only take good food pictures if you have a super expensive camera, a fancy lens, lights, tripods, etc. My coworker showed me that I could get amazing food shots on my iPhone, and that's what I used for the first six months I was food blogging.

What's your favorite tip?

I love to take shots from all different angles. Some photos of recipes end up looking better from "above" and some from side view etc.. Also, the way the food is displayed, "presentation" plays a very important role.

My favorite tip from a friend is always try to photograph dishes in natural light! It may mean getting up a bit earlier or moving around the house to the perfect window/ lighted area, but the results are well worth it! Also a few props from the dollar store in the form of colorfulk napkins, cutlery, plates or glasses adds an extra special touch!

My tip is to take tons of pictures, making small adjustments in between (focus, angle, props, etc.). If you think a specific shot has promise, take a couple extra shots in the same way just to be sure. It's a numbers game to some degree. Sometimes you get lucky & your first shot is THE ONE, sometimes it's not. Nobody but you will know whether your best picture was on frame 5 or frame 55.
