Maybe not kosher cooking per se, but definitely kosher food prep...

I have not seen a bug in strawberries for years. I check quite carefully and also wash thoroughly just in case and I have seen bugs, but it was a long time ago, only one or two per batch, and one of the times was in Israel which I think is generally more prone to buggy vegetables. So overall I have gotten pretty comfortable with strawberries and just check/wash them as a matter of routine.

WELL this week I found SEVERAL bugs in TWO different containers of strawberries. In one I found two without even having to look very closely, didn't inspect the rest so closely - went straight to washing, found one bug in the water after washing, and after rinsing them off found nothing more. In the second container several days later there were LOTS of bugs in the first look-over. Maybe ten. I was SO grossed out. After thorough washing again I did not find any more. So I guess the washing is effective. I HOPE the washing is effective! I follow the OU guidelines for that.

I am so disappointed. I love fresh strawberries. Are they doomed? I decided to wait a few weeks before buying any more in case it was a one-crop infestation or something. If I see more bugs when I buy more I will just have to stay away from them, it takes such a long time to check them when you know there are many bugs and keep re-washing and re-checking to make sure! Those bugs are TIIIIIINY!

Ugh. I'm so sad. :(

I don't even attempt to check my own strawberries. I use frozen, mostly. Not the same. :(

You just eat them plain? I've never tried that. I use the Bodek ones in recipes and smoothies but I kind of feel like you have to eat the fresh ones fresh.

I never shied away from checking my own because they have always been perfectly clean. I HOPE this was a one-off bad crop.

Don't either attempt. I hear u should wash it with soapy water. That was enough to deter me.

Well I don't necessarily eat them in the traditional way, but I eat them straight from the freezer as a snack. Yum. Or in smoothies.

I wonder if it's related to the unusually warm weather? I had completely given up fresh strawberries. I saw a Rebbitzen buying them in the store, and she told me how to check them. It's so exciting to have fresh strawberries! I'll be sad to be without again, too--if they're buggy.

That does NOT count. I want them soft, juicy, and sweet. (Is it just me or are the frozen ones more tart? I always add more sugar when I use frozen)

We usually worked quite hard to check out all the bugs from the strawberries so we started avoiding using it. My friend actually shared a great tip with me!!!

Instead of using fresh strawberries as a sauce she would blend kiwis and add a drop of red food coloring.... (I also added strawberry extract) My family was all delighted and no one was able to guess that I used kiwis instead of strawberries.
Make sure to use ripe kiwis!!!!

Please, please, please tell people when you use kiwi in a recipe! People have terrible allergic reactions to kiwi -- my tongue & lips swelled and my throat closed up the one time I ate the cantaloupe & strawberry that were touching a slice of kiwi!
Thanks!

So interesting, my husband has that kind of severe allergy to kiwis and besides for him, until now I had never heard of that from anyone else! Everyone knows about nut allergies but kiwi?! That was a surprise.
