You may be looking at this article with a puzzled look on your face, either you’re wondering why you would end up in KC for twelve hours or perhaps if there is adequate demand for kosher food in America’s heartland.
The economic outlook looks good in Kansas City and Overland Park, home to Kansas City’s orthodox community, boasts a growing, diverse and loving community. In the last 12 months, Congregation BIAV, our Orthodox synagogue, welcomed thirty new member families, some of whom relocated from better known Jewish hubs such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Jerusalem. There is Jewish Life in-between the coasts, and 12 hours in our humble home-town will leave you begging for more time with us, and Kansas City's Vaad HaKashrut
is taking care of our food!
BQ Beef Brisket - Rachel’s Cafe
No trip to the Mid-West is complete without BBQ, and while the Zagat-rated Jack Stack BBQ is yet to offer us a full-time Kosher venue, Rachel’s Café at Village Shalom makes a wonderful BBQ beef sandwich. Served on Rye or a Bun, with a side of fries, this taste of the Mid-West will leave you satisfied until dinner, and will cost you less than $5. Rachel’s café offers a great soup of the day and many other main dishes, but I’m loyal to the BBQ Beef!
Rachel’s Café is located at 5500 W. 123rd St. in Overland Park. Hours are 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 913-266-8422.
Southern Fried Chicken - Hen House Kosher Island
The Hen House located in Leawood has a Kosher Island providing salads, snacks and made-to-order sandwiches, but be sure to order the Fried Chicken! Made fresh daily (except Tuesdays), this is a treat that my family in California ask me to bring back every time we visit. All the baked goods at this branch of the Hen House are kosher too, the Vaad supervises the parev and dairy desserts, breads and bagels and their donuts are a real treat!
Not all Hen House stores carry Kosher Food, be sure to visit Hen House at 11721 Roe Ave in Leawood or call (913) 338-0600. Trader Joe’s also carry a good selection of Kosher Food and with a store on both sides of the State Line, you’ll going to be close to one of them. Call (816) 333 5322 for the MO store and (913) 327 7209 for the KS store.
If you time your visit right, you may have the chance to dine at Princess Gardens. This authentic Chinese eatery kashers the kitchen once a month and gives the community a chance to dine together. Kosher Chinese dates are usually announced on the Vaad's Facebook Page
. Congregations at BIAV and TLC (one of our chabad synagogues) play host to kosher dining events too, so be sure to join us if you’re in town for one of our regular pizza, sushi or restaurant nights.
Bloggers and BBQ
Kansas City is home to kosher food Bloggers. This American Bite and The Sephardic Table as well as known blogger, Kosher on a Budget, this summer, will host the nation's first authentic and supervised Kosher BBQ Contest. Inforamtion about about the evnet is yet to formallly announced, but if I were you, I'd plan to be in Kansas City on August 19, 2012. More info will be found at www.kosherbbq.com
The warmth of the community means you’ll never go without a Shabbat meal if your visit is longer than 12 hours. We may not have thousands of kosher restaurants to choose from but our community will welcome you, feed you, and invite you back for more!
