In seminary, Onion board was always served on mondays. It was one of the only days I ate the schools lunch. You can make recipe Homotzie by substituting water for the grape juice and increasing the sugar by 1/4 cup.
2 large onion
½ cup oil, divided
2¼ tsp dry yeast
3 oz warm water
⅛ cup sugar
4 cup flour
7 oz white grape juice
1 tsp salt
- poppy seeds and kosher salt, for topping
Peel and slice the onions. Saute in 1/4 cup oil until golden brown.
Proof yeast in the water. Add the sugar, flour, oil, egg and grape juice and salt. Mix to form a smooth dough.
Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Press the dough onto the lined baking sheet. Poke holes with a fork.
Spread out the sauteed onions. Top with poppy seeds and kosher salt.
Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.
