Moist, chocolaty and delicious. Even people who do not like dates will love it -- they will not realize they are there.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • 1 cup chopped dates

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 cup flour

  • 1 cup mayonnaise

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 cup chocolate chips

  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. (185 degrees C.)

  2. Grease 9"x13" pan

  3. Combine liquid, dates and 1 tsp. baking soda & cool to room temperature.

  4. Mix all ingredients, except chocolate chips and nuts.

  5. Pour batter in pan.

  6. Sprinkle with 1 c. chocolate chips and ½ c. chopped walnuts or pecans.

  7. Bake 30 minutes or till cake tests done

  8. In reply to comment below, I've fixed the instructions. It's mayo in place of margarine and eggs, making it delightfully moist!

This is a great cake. I grew up with this in my house, and this recipe is the correct recipe. If you try it you will not be disapointed.

Please check the ingredient list

I'd like to try this cake, however I think the ingredient list is faulty. Prep steps list creaming margarine with the sugar, and adding eggs: how much margarine and how many eggs? Also, 1 tsp. baking powder is listed twice- is this intentional or a duplication?
Also, would you know if substituting oil for the margarine in this recipe would be successful?

thanks,
Shvigs
