This kugel is a winner because it's enjoyable still warm on erev shaboss, but we always feel it's so much better the other day after spending a night in the fridge, over a glass of milk! It can also be served as a dessert with a scoop of ice cream!
12 green apples
1 Tbsp cinnamon
4½ cup flour
1 cup sugar (if you like sweeter add a half of a cup)
1½ tsp vanilla sugar
1¼ cup oil
1 tsp baking powder
Peel the apples and grate them.
Add the cinnamon to the apples. Mix well and set aside.
In a large bowl mix in all the other ingredients, starting from the eggs, the flour, the sugar and so on.
Mix the dough in a way that it will become crumbly. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it but its fun! Its done easier with the tips of your fingers and by taking the dough from the bottom to the top of the bowl. But maybe you will find a way that's easier for you to do it.
After all is crumbly, with crumbs not too small and not too big, divide the dough in 3.
Take one part of the dough and press it firmly against the surface of the pan forming the first layer of the pie. Make sure the pan is covered with dough on all sides.
Take some of the apples and assort them over the dough as the first layer of filling of the pie. Keep in mind that you still want to have more for the other layer, and enough to cover up the layer under it.
For the next layer, sprinkle your second part of crumbs on the apple layer without messing it too much because you want to keep the layer underneath. Cover up all of the apple layer well.
Do 1 more apple layer, and one more dough layer with the third part of the dough.
That dough layer is the last one, and the one on the top so make sure it's fairly sprinkled on and has covered all of the apple layer beneath it.
Bake for an hour in the oven set on 400F.
